Railway Crossing Awareness

SDAF dedicated rail roaders and citizens, aiming to save lives by educating Kenyan citizens about the hazards surrounding rail property and trains. SDAF railway safety ILCAD program is a partnership initiative of the Railway UIC, the worldwide railway organisation and works in cooperation with the rail industry, government, police, unions, and many public organizations and community groups. We believe the key to achieving this goal is public education to have road deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

The International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is an awareness campaign on level crossing safety. The campaign has been spearheaded by the Railway UIC, the worldwide railway organisation with the support of the railway community around the world. Safedrive Africa Foundation is among a growing number of road safety sector organizations, that has been involved in raising awareness of the risks at level crossings to change road users and pedestrian’s behavior to “Act safely at level crossings”. Each year, Kenya as participating partner hosts the awareness event. Each participant is given good practices and shares ILCAD initiative to increase safety and lower the number of accidents.

Our dedicated staff and Road Rail Safety Ambassadors in Kenya educates citizens of all ages through rail safety presentations to schools, youth clubs, driver training academies, corporate companies, PSV Saccos, two wheelers saccos and other community groups. By educating Kenyans and east Africa community about the hazards surrounding standard gauge railway (SGR) ,Commuter rail, trams, railway property and trains, we are trying to prevent railway crossing, boarding and trespassing incidents that can lead to serious injuries or even death because we believe even one incident is one too many.

Road Rail safety is a shared responsibility. Changing behavior around road railway property and saving lives takes:

That is why we work with the rail industry, governments, law enforcement, PSV groups, the media, and other organizations and communities to educate Kenyans about safe behavior around railway property, tracks and trains. Our success lies in our ability to reach Kenyans of all ages including women and make them aware of the dangers surrounding railway crossings, as well as the serious risks associated with trespassing on railway crossing zones. To this end, we participate in various events, produce and distribute educational material, run driver education programs, hold safety presentations, and spread the rail safety message through traditional media and social media networks
