The mission of Safedrive Africa Foundation (SDAF) is to raise public awareness about road safety, the dangers and possible consequences of drinking and driving for all those involved. SDAF aim to provide not only a source of information but the community where people who have been affected by drinking and driving, or who have a keen interest in the subject, can come, share ideas and help and support one another. There is so much work left to do, Drunk driving makes up about a third of all traffic deaths on the roads. SDAF together with partners, stakeholders, community, Authorities and lead agencies Fights Drunk Driving Every Day, from catchy slogans like Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk to now popular.
SDAF has always champions safe driving that's why we're involved with many different programs in the community that educate people on drink driving, injury prevention and consequences. It's important to remember that we can all help put an end to drunk driving accidents they are one of the few truly preventable accidents. Drinking and driving ruins many people’s lives and we want to help ALL people who have been affected by drinking and driving in any way imaginable in any way we possibly can. This not only includes innocent victims and their families, but actual drink drivers themselves.
We DO NOT support or condone the act of drinking alcohol and then driving, however, we do realise that in many drink driving cases, the only people affected (thankfully) are the drink drivers themselves, many of which are otherwise law abiding citizens who find themselves in a difficult and stressful situation that is completely alien to them. Safedrive Africa Foundation does not seek to punish or alienate those people who have made an unfortunate and potentially dangerous choice by deciding to drive after consuming alcohol. Rather we aim to inform, empower, help, support and educate people in the hope they will make better decisions in the future.
Holiday gatherings, dark days, bad roads, drinks, and driving are a dangerous mix all too common. The time for merry making is here. With that, many of us will be going to parties, to have fun and have alcoholic drinks. When the party ends, the question is, are you driving home? Many people risk their lives by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. And often, it turns bad. Driving impaired not only puts everyone on the roadway in danger, it can have serious legal and monetary consequences. Penalties for DUIs can include expensive fines, license revocation and jail time.
SDAF work with many partners, community, Authorities, agencies to donate and distributes DUI publications and IEC campaigns materials to make our roads safer and prevent drunk driving. In the beginning, the campaigns were directed to friends, families and alcohol establishments. The messages ranged from “Drinking and Driving Can Kill a Friendship” and evolved to the widely recognized “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk”. The idea was that a friend or loved one should take responsibility and not allow others to get behind the wheel if they are not sober. During this time, designated driver campaigns also became popular, encouraging both the person drinking and their friend or family member to take responsibility to prevent drunk driving.
